North Salem, NY (1.7.21) – – Please see the statement of Andy Pelosi, Executive Director of The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus in response to insurrectionists overtaking the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“Yesterday afternoon, at the behest of President Trump, a violent mob of white nationalists were able to storm the U.S. Capitol, and in an act of domestic terrorism, disrupt and delay a vote to certify the 2020 Presidential Election.

“Sadly, for our country, yesterday’s act of insurrection should not come as a surprise. For the last several years, the outgoing President, along with certain leaders and his sympathizers, have laid the groundwork to enable violent actions against our government, as well as violence against peaceful social justice movements.

“As we witnessed yesterday, the open and concealed carrying of firearms led by white, domestic terrorists violently disrupted our democratic institution, and resulted in death and injury.  Moreover, this unlawful action was carried out with the intent to undermine our fundamental rights as citizens guaranteed under the Constitution of the United States.

“We call on the federal government to identify, arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in yesterday’s acts of insurrection and to denounce the use of armed violence as the means to respond to political disagreements.

“As Americans, we must all strive to remain vigilant stewards of our country’s non-violent, democratic principles.”
