“No student should have to fear pursuing their dreams on a college campus,”
Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill as quoted in the Washigton Post

(Croton Falls, NY)  Following a mass shooting yesterday on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas where  three people where killed, another injured and the entire UNLV campus traumatized, The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus’ Executive Director Andy Pelosi issued the following statement:

“While we mourn the dead and hold the injured close, we also remember the families and friends of the victims from yesterday’s shooting at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, as well as the entire campus community at this most difficult time. Their lives will never be the same.

The Campaign commends campus and local law enforcement for their swift response that helped neutralize the gunman outside of Beam Hall and may have certainly saved lives. And we are grateful to know the White’s House’s newly minted Office of Gun Violence Prevention has been coordinating federal assets from about a dozen different agencies on the ground in Las Vegas since almost immediately after the shooting occurred.

Our country’s institutions of higher education, must be safe havens for learning.* We cannot permit campus firearm incidents to be seen as normalized, nor should we allow our students, faculty, and staff to be traumatized again and again by such senseless shootings.

For those public officials who stand in the way of safer campuses, we implore them to abandon the gun lobby, to join the Gun Violence Prevention Movement and to fight for real gun reform in this country.
