From the Executive Director

Hello and welcome to our July Newsletter:

As the Summer season begins, we are heartbroken by the number of mass shootings that took place over the July 4th holiday and the daily carnage being inflicted upon people by a flood of firearms in our nation. We all must remain vigilant and speak out with the press and our elected officials so that firearm violence is not the cost of freedom in our nation.

Over the next several weeks, The Campaign is focusing on strengthening our organizational infrastructure, including: completing strategic planning with our board, important website and social media updates, and preparing for the state fights we know are coming in 2024.

The Campaign will also acknowledge our 15th year fighting for safe educational spaces nationwide with our Annual Benefit on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Hammond Museum in North Salem, NY.  Sponsorships and tickets are now available and more information about the event, including our honoree, will soon follow.

Earlier this month, our co-founder and board chair emeritus John Johnson and I participated in the Assault Weapon Ban Survivor Sit-in at the U.S. Capitol organized by Sam Schwartz. Thanks to Sam, many organizations and passersby called for action to pass the bill by meeting directly with legislators and staff during the week-long event.  You can support federal legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines along with safe gun storage (Ethan’s Law) below.

Finally, please consider making a donation in support of The Campaign.  This work does not happen without you.

Thanks for all you do.

The Campaign at #SurvivorSit-In To Ban Assault Weapons in DC

Led by Sam Schwartz (center foreground), survivors and activists called on Congress to act on the Federal Assault Weapons ban in early June.  L-R – Ralph Fales, Andy Pelosi, Liz Russell, Po Murray, Gail Schwartz, and Sarah Fishkind

Campaign Co-Founder and Past President John Johnson made an appearance at the sit in as well.

Pass The Federal Assault Weapons Ban

Despite pressure from legions of survivors and others, Congress still has not called a vote to pass the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. We need to keep pushing these elected officials to act.

Tell Congress:
Pass the Assault Weapons Ban Now.

Ethan’s Law – Protecting Kids With Safe Storage

Ethan’s Law requires all firearms and ammunition to be safely stored away whenever children are present – in the home or in the workplace.

Keep all children safe. Tell Congress to pass Ethan’s Law now.

Victory in New York State

The New York State Legislature has adjourned and the State Senate failed to move S.1407 out of committee. This bill would have changed current state law, which prohibits guns on New York’s public colleges and universities. Thank you for your help in opposing this dangerous legislation.

Looking for a fun summer project for the whole family that can save lives? Host a private screening of Kids Around – Lock Guns Down. Learn about Ethan’s Law that promotes the secure storage of firearms. Then act by contacting your federal elected officials to support it – and pass it.

Brave New Films and the Keep Kids Safe Coalition are counting on hosts like you to bring the film to your community to raise awareness, promote the secure storage of firearms, and take action by contacting your elected officials to support Ethan’s Law.
